philion the Streets. Christopher Keeley’s Social Documentary Photography.

Social documentary photography or concerned photography is a socially critical genre of photography which is dedicated to the life of underprivileged or disadvantaged people.

The poor, the social outcasts or the lower classes are not portrayed as objects of exoticism, but in compassionate observation.

The photographers do not show poverty as a stigma, but rather its dignity.

They hand back an individual – and often proudly elevated – face to those at the bottom of society who often appear just as an anonymous community in statistics.

Social documentary photography is not an abstemious, unemotional exposure of facts, but rather a photography with a tendency.

The documentary power of the images is associated with the desire for political and social change.
