Recovery in Depth
Dr. Michael Aanavi
psychotherapy & acupuncture – addiction, trauma, recovery – san rafael, marin, california.
Addiction is, among other things, a process of disconnection, and in my experience this reflexive desire to disconnect, to be elsewhere, is often rooted in trauma.
For many, the tendency to disconnect—from the body, from relationships, from a core sense of authenticity or directionality—can linger, even years after active addiction has ended.
From my perspective, this residual process stems from both the personal experience of trauma, and from the transpersonal—from what’s often referred to as historical, intergenerational, or ancestral trauma.
Dr. Michael Aanavi is a clinical psychologist, licensed acupuncturist, and recovering heroin addict.
He entered the Phoenix House Foundation in New York City in 1988, and after completing residential treatment went on to earn a Ph.D. in clinical/multicultural and community psychology as well as an M.S. in traditional Chinese medicine.
He has worked in a variety of capacities in addiction treatment, psychiatric, and medical settings, and is a former faculty member at UCSF School of Medicine. In his life and in his clinical work he incorporates acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, dreamwork, somatics, qigong, and mindfulness practice.
