Parable
There’s an active addict walking down the road. He falls into a hole in the road, the hole is Addiction.
He’s in pain and can’t get out no matter how hard he tries. Along comes a doctor, the addict says please help me. The doctor writes out a prescription and goes on his way.
A clergy member walks by, Help!!! cries the addict, He tosses down a pamphlet of scripture, Along comes a psychiatrist, the addict says please help me.
The psychiatrist asks some questions & writes our addict a prescription then goes on his way. By now the addict is writhing in pain and knows he’s dying.
Along comes an N.A. Member and looks down in the hole. The addict says please help me, Please !!! ,and the N.A. Member JUMPS INTO THE HOLE!!!. The addict looks at him and says “are you nuts! Now were both down here! “The N.A. Member says “I know but you see I’ve been here before and I know the way out!”
Why are We here ? “Most of us realized, that in our addictions, we were
slowly committing suicide, but such cunning enemies of life are
narcotics and sedation that we had lost the power to do anything about
it. Jail did not help us at all. Medicine, religion and psychiatry
seemed to have no answers for us that we could use. All these methods
having failed for us, in desperation, we sought help from each other in
Narcotics Anonymous.”
